RenFuel Materials develops lignin-based materials that can replace plastic. Lignin is found in all vegetation and is the second most abundant biomass in nature, after cellulose.
We extract the lignin, among other substances, from the pulp mill’s black liquor, where it is available as a residual product in such large quantities that it would suffice to produce all the plastic we need in Sweden and throughout Europe. We see great potential for our unique products.

The need to replace fossil plastic with bioplastics and to recycle it to a much greater extent is enormous. The challenges are great to find enough bio-based raw materials with the right properties that are commercially viable.

With our unique, patented technology, we convert lignin into different types of materials that completely or partially replace fossil-based plastics. Our lignin materials are technically equivalent to the conventional fossil plastics, but reduce the carbon footprint of the products. In addition, they can be mechanically recycled.

Less than 1% of the currently produced plastic globally is bio-based.
Bioplastics are plastics that are derived from biomass. They have the same properties as conventional plastics, but with a reduced carbon footprint. Bioplastics are divided into biodegradable and non-degradable plastics where the non-degradable accounts for about 45% in the world.
In Sweden, very little degradable plastics are produced, since we have a much higher recycling rate than, for example, other Europe where composting is more common. Most of the non-degradable bioplastics are of the “drop-in” type, which completely or partially replaces various fossil plastics.
The bioplastics that are currently manufactured in Sweden are largely produced from crops such as starch and sugar. With our lignin materials, there is now a sustainable, ethical and very competitive alternative.
In Sweden, almost all plastics today consist of imported fossil oil.

Bio-based polymers are produced from renewable biomass. The carbon in the raw materials for bioplastics grows on the earth’s surface and is part of the earth’s natural carbon cycle and bioplastics therefore do not increase CO2 in the atmosphere.
Lignin is the second most abundant biomass on earth.
Lignin fills the spaces between the cellulose in the plants and allows them to grow tall. In the Swedish pulp and paper industry, there are about 6 million tonnes of lignin, of which 95% is burned as part of the pulping process rather than being used higher up in the value chain. Phasing out the fossil plastics as soon as possible and replacing them with bio-based materials directly reduces the carbon footprint.
Lignin-based materials as an alternative to fossil plastics produce over 90% CO2 reduction. RenFuel Materials is now launching a solution with materials made of forest lignin that can replace fossil plastics.

Our extensive patents in reactive extrusion processes – LIGNOREX™ – cover the very latest cutting edge technology for the production of bioplastics.
The process breaks down the lignin into a very energy-efficient production without toxic emissions or hazardous residues with full replacement of a sustainable and ethically problem-free raw material. In the process, the strength, flexibility, tightness, heat resistance of the lignin plastics are adjusted as required and the end products have high processability that meets the demands of the plastics industry.
Lignin-based materials are strung and chopped into production-adapted granules and used in the same way as fossil counterparts unmixed or as a drop-in with any degree of admixture in fossil-based plastics.

RenFuel Materials can manufacture thermoplastic, lignin-based materials that can be used in existing infrastructure to increase the bio-based content in a variety of applications, such as storage products, containers, vehicle components, building materials, packaging, coating products and furniture.
